The Bank of Japan's 200 Yen note of 1945 was one of several high-denomination wartime issues rushed into circulation as Japan's military situation collapsed and hyperinflationary pressure mounted. By mid-1945 the money supply had expanded so aggressively that notes like this were practically a symptom of fiscal breakdown rather than an instrument of normal commerce.
Postwar occupation authorities and the subsequent currency reforms of 1946 — which imposed a new yen conversion at punishing rates — rendered these notes worthless almost immediately. Much of the wartime issue was destroyed or abandoned, which complicates survival estimates for the series.
