Reverse description A detailed relief depiction of the historic Korean geobukseon (turtle ship), the celebrated 16th-century ironclad warship credited to Admiral Yi Sun-sin, occupies the central field. The vessel is shown in profile facing right, with its distinctive hexagonally-plated domed deck, a dragon-headed prow, multiple oars extended along the lower hull, and an anchor visible at the stern. The Hangul inscription 거북선 (turtle ship) appears to the lower left of the vessel. The commemorative legend 조국해방50돐기념 arcs along the upper border, the denomination 200원 is inscribed in the lower field, and the date range 1945–1995 appears along the lower rim.

Additional information

Issued in 1995 to mark the fiftieth anniversary of Korea's liberation from Japanese colonial rule, this is one of several North Korean commemorative gold pieces released in that period almost exclusively for the foreign collector market — hard currency generation, not domestic celebration. The DPRK's commemorative coin program through the 1990s was administered largely through foreign trading companies, and many issues saw nominal or unverifiable mintages.

KM#95.1 designates this as the first of two recorded varieties for the type.
