Issued to mark the opening of the Reserve Bank of Vanuatu's new headquarters in Port Vila, this piece reflects the institution's efforts to assert financial identity for a nation that only gained independence in 1980 and replaced the joint Anglo-French Condominium's currency arrangements with the vatu in 1981. The bank itself had operated for nearly three decades before occupying purpose-built premises substantial enough to warrant a commemorative coin.
