The Burkit — golden eagle — occupies a singular place in Kazakh nomadic culture, where the tradition of berkutchi (eagle hunting) has been practiced across the steppe for at least four millennia. UNESCO added it to the Intangible Cultural Heritage list in 2010, a recognition Kazakhstan actively pursued as part of broader efforts to codify and elevate pre-Soviet pastoral traditions that were systematically suppressed during the Soviet period.
