Aliya Moldagulova was a Soviet Kazakh sniper who, at 18, became one of the most decorated female combatants of the Second World War, credited with 91 confirmed kills before being killed in action near Novgorod in January 1944. She was posthumously awarded the title Hero of the Soviet Union. Kazakhstan has long claimed her as a national figure, and this circulating commemorative continues a broader series honoring Kazakhs whose recognition was filtered — and sometimes suppressed — through Soviet historiography rather than national memory.
