| Additional information |
This coin commemorates the October 21, 1969 coup in which Major General Mohamed Siad Barre seized power following the assassination of President Abdirashid Ali Shermarke. The military junta renamed the country the Somali Democratic Republic and moved quickly to produce commemorative gold issues — partly as hard currency instruments, partly as propaganda directed at international audiences. Barre's Soviet-aligned government would hold power for over two decades before collapsing in 1991.
