| Reverse description | The reverse features a central depiction of a tall victory monument or obelisk topped by a figure, set before a wide colonnaded building or arcade rendered in low relief. A ring of eight five-pointed stars frames the monument on either side in the field. The Arabic denomination 'شلن ٢٠٠ صومالي' is inscribed in two lines across the upper field. Along the lower border, the bilingual denomination legend reads 'SCELLINI 200 SHILLINGS' in Latin script. The weight indicator '28' and goldsmith's hallmarks appear in small characters at the lower centre of the field. |

This coin commemorates the October 21, 1969 coup in which Major General Mohamed Siad Barre seized power following the assassination of President Abdirashid Ali Shermarke. The military junta renamed the country the Somali Democratic Republic and moved quickly to produce commemorative gold issues — partly as hard currency instruments, partly as propaganda directed at international audiences. Barre's Soviet-aligned government would hold power for over two decades before collapsing in 1991.
