Obverse description Facing bust of President Aden Abdullah Osman Daar, the first President of the Somali Republic, depicted wearing a suit, tie, and eyeglasses, rendered in high relief against a deeply mirrored proof field. The bilingual legend 'REPUBBLICA SOMALA' in Latin and 'الجمهورية الصومالية' in Arabic script arc around the upper periphery, flanking the portrait on either side. The commemorative dates '1960 - 1965' appear along the lower border, marking the fifth anniversary of Somali independence. An engraver's monogram is visible at the lower left of the portrait. The design reflects the academic medallic style characteristic of the Zecca di Roma.

Additional information

Issued to mark Somalia's fifth anniversary of independence from Italian trusteeship, this was among the first gold coinages struck for the Somali Republic and was produced in limited quantities intended primarily for collectors and foreign dignitaries rather than domestic circulation. The young republic was already under considerable fiscal strain by 1965, and gold commemoratives of this weight were well beyond the purchasing power of ordinary Somalis.

The .900 fineness follows the same standard used by Italian colonial-era coinage — a continuity almost certainly dictated by the minting contractor rather than any deliberate policy choice.
