Somalia's gold bullion series from the mid-2000s was produced under licensing arrangements with private minting companies — the coins carry Somali legal tender status largely as a commercial formality, issued during a period when Somalia had no functioning central bank and the Transitional Federal Government had only just been established in 2004. Actual monetary authority over the shilling was effectively nonexistent.
