The 200 Shilling denomination was introduced in 1986 as the highest face value in circulation at the time, a direct response to inflationary pressure that had eroded the practical utility of the 100 Shilling note. Philip Ndegwa, whose signature appears on the earliest printings, was a significant figure beyond his role as Central Bank governor — an economist who had authored influential work on African development policy and later chaired several major Kenyan corporations simultaneously.
Three signature combinations exist within this short issue window, making the Ndegwa/Subiudyo and Kotut/Subiudyo variants worth distinguishing carefully. The Kotut-signed examples reflect his appointment in 1988, which effectively dates the final printings to that year alone.
