State Bank of India's external-issue travellers cheques occupied an awkward regulatory space in the 1970s and 1980s — sold to non-resident Indians and foreign visitors, they were denominated in rupees but designed to be encashed abroad through correspondent banking arrangements, effectively functioning as a quasi-forex instrument at a time when India maintained strict capital controls under FERA. The "external" designation distinguished these from the domestic series and carried specific RBI authorization requirements.
India Security Press at Nashik, established in 1928, handled the bulk of India's secure document printing — currency, passports, and instruments like this. Specimen examples were retained for internal circulation and correspondent bank reference, never activated for encashment.
