Beschrijving voorzijde The obverse carries a central vignette of the Independence Memorial Hall in Colombo, surrounded by a montage of vignettes commemorating fifty years of independence, including Free Education and Health Services, the Gal Oya Development Project, Electricity Development, the Bandaranaike Memorial International Conference Hall, the Mahaweli Development Project, Bandaranaike International Airport, Telecommunications Development, the Investment Promotion Zone, the New Parliament Complex in Kotte, Industrial Development, the development of Colombo City, and a depiction of religious harmony with a Church, Mosque, Hindu Temple, and Buddhist Pagoda symbolising national unity. The date of issue, 1998-02-04, and the denomination in Sinhala, Tamil, and English appear alongside the trilingual inscription of the Central Bank of Sri Lanka. The commemorative legend "Independence 1948–1998" is inscribed in all three official languages.

Beschrijving keerzijde The reverse presents a central vignette of the Temple of the Tooth (Sri Dalada Maligawa) in Kandy, framed by a panoramic montage of historical scenes tracing Sri Lanka's civilisational heritage: the advent of Prince Vijaya, the arrival of Arahant Mahinda and the introduction of Buddhism to the island, King Dutugemunu's unification of Sri Lanka, the construction of the Sigiriya Rock Fortress, the construction of the Parakrama Samudra reservoir, the period of European colonial rule, and the historic hauling down of the British flag by Wariyapola Sri Sumangala Thero in 1815. The denomination in Sinhala, Tamil, and English and the trilingual Central Bank inscription appear within the design. The overall composition is rendered in a multicolour underprint on a polymer substrate.
