Additional information

Fujairah was among the last of the Trucial States to receive formal British recognition — only in 1952 — and its coinage program in the late 1960s was essentially a revenue exercise aimed at collectors and speculators rather than circulation. These large gold issues were produced in anticipation of UAE federation, which rendered them obsolete when the union was formalized in December 1971.

Mohammed bin Hamad Al Sharqi had ruled since 1938, and the pieces bearing his name were struck by the Bern Mint under contract.
