Socotra sits in the Arabian Sea roughly 240 kilometers east of the Horn of Africa, and by 2018 Yemen was in the third year of a civil war that had effectively erased any functioning central monetary authority. Coins issued under the Yemeni name during this period were produced entirely for the collector market — no piece of this type ever entered circulation on the island or anywhere else in Yemen.

Socotra itself had changed hands politically during the conflict, occupied by UAE-backed forces in 2018 over Sana'a's protests. The timing is not coincidental.
