Brazil's shift to copper-nickel coinage in the 1870s was partly a response to chronic shortages of silver and the practical failures of earlier bronze issues, which had been poorly received and hoarded almost immediately. The 200 Réis was among the first denominations struck in the new alloy, produced at the Casa da Moeda do Rio de Janeiro during a period when the imperial government was simultaneously financing the tail end of the Paraguayan War's debt burden.
KM#478 is known to collectors in two distinct date groupings with subtle hub differences between earlier and later strikes within the series.
