Obverse description The obverse displays the crowned 'G.P.' countermark applied by the Portuguese government in 1887 for use in the Azores, struck over the obverse of an earlier Portuguese host coin. The countermark consists of the initials 'G.P.' surmounted by a royal crown, punched into the field of the host coin. Visible beneath the countermark is the host coin's original design: a central crown above the denomination 'LXXX' (80 Réis), flanked by trefoil ornaments, and surrounded by a circular legend reading 'JOANNES V DG PORT ET ALG REX', identifying King João V of Portugal. The entire design is encircled by a beaded border.
