Opmerkingen

The Junta de Moneda de Cataluña was not a conventional bank of issue but an emergency administrative body convened during a period of acute copper coin shortage in mid-nineteenth century Spain. Catalonia's commercial centers, particularly Barcelona, were routinely paralyzed by the lack of small and medium denomination specie, and the Junta was empowered specifically to authorize fiduciary substitutes — a stopgap measure that Madrid viewed with considerable unease.

Regional paper of this type rarely survived in quantity. Redemption rates were erratic, and public trust in non-central issues was thin.
