The Banco de España's 1862 issues belong to a brief transitional window before Spain's monetary system was overhauled by the coinage law of 1868, which replaced the real de vellón with the peseta. By 1862 the Bank had already absorbed the old Banco de San Fernando and held a near-monopoly on note issue in Madrid, though provincial banks in Barcelona, Bilbao, and elsewhere still competed in their own territories.
Surviving examples from this series are genuinely uncommon. The low survival rate owes more to active redemption campaigns in the 1870s and 1880s than to heavy circulation wear — the Bank systematically retired pre-peseta denominated notes once the new unit was established.
