Brazil's 200 real note was introduced in September 2020 specifically to ease pressure on smaller denominations during the COVID-19 pandemic, when cash handling became more fraught and the central bank faced unusual distribution constraints. It was the highest denomination ever issued under the Real currency family, which launched in 1994. The decision was controversial — critics argued it would facilitate corruption and informal-economy concealment, a debate that shadowed the note's release for months.
Casa da Moeda do Brasil printed the entire run domestically, which has been standard for the Real series since inception.
