The Omron rings — a constellation of small circles invisible to the naked eye but detectable by photocopier firmware — were added to this series after counterfeit 200 Rand notes began appearing in circulation in sufficient numbers to concern the Reserve Bank. The rings trigger automatic suppression in compliant imaging devices, a passive deterrent that costs nothing to enforce once embedded in the design. South Africa adopted the feature later than most comparable economies.
Two signatures appear on notes of this pick number: Gill Marcus, who served as Governor from 2009 to 2014, and Lesetja Kganyago, who succeeded her. The transition makes signature-specific examples worth distinguishing in any serious collection.
