Two heraldic lion supporters flank the base of the throne. | Additional information |
Alderney's legal tender coinage is issued under a arrangement with the Royal Mint but produced independently, allowing the island's authorities to commission pieces outside the standard British commemorative program. This 2-ounce gold issue marks Elizabeth II's Platinum Jubilee — 70 years on the throne, a reign that outlasted 14 British Prime Ministers and saw the transition from post-war austerity to the modern Commonwealth. No other British monarch had previously reached the milestone, making 2022 the first time any such jubilee coinage was warranted at all.
Elizabeth died on September 8, 2022, just months after these jubilee issues entered the market.
