The original Waterloo Medal, issued in 1816, was the first campaign medal awarded to every British soldier present at the battle — from Wellington down to the lowest private — a democratizing gesture unprecedented in British military history. Over 39,000 were distributed. The decision to include all ranks equally was controversial among the officer class, and the medal's suspension ring was deliberately designed to allow it to be worn with existing regimental decorations without displacing them.
This issue marks the 210th anniversary. The 62.42g gold format mirrors the two-ounce proof standard the Royal Mint has used for major commemorative sovereigns since the early 2000s.
