In 1991, the Casa de Moneda produced a series of aluminum pattern pieces exploring weight and alloy combinations ahead of Mexico's major monetary reform — the redenomination that would strip three zeros from the peso in 1993. The Xochimilco issue belongs to this experimental run, never approved for circulation. Aluminum was ultimately rejected; the circulating bimetallic coinage that emerged from the reform used stainless steel and aluminum bronze instead.
