The 200 Pesos Oro denomination was introduced into Dominican circulation in the early 2000s as inflation steadily eroded the purchasing power of lower values — the country had gone through a severe banking crisis in 2003 that wiped out three major commercial banks and briefly sent the peso into freefall, losing roughly half its value against the dollar within a year. A higher-denomination note became a practical necessity rather than a prestige issue.
Thomas De La Rue's involvement here is routine for the region, but the 2007 print run coincided with a period of relative monetary stabilization under IMF-backed fiscal reforms.
