The Banco de la Província de Buenos Aires occupied an unusual position in Argentine monetary affairs — it functioned as a quasi-central bank for Buenos Aires province long after the province had reluctantly joined the Argentine Confederation, and its notes circulated on the strength of provincial credit rather than any federal guarantee.
