Issued to mark the 150th anniversary of the Battle of Boyacá on August 7, 1819 — the engagement that effectively secured Colombian independence from Spain in a fight lasting under two hours. Simón Bolívar's forces routed a royalist column at the Teatinos bridge, capturing the Spanish commander José María Barreiro along with nearly his entire army.
Colombia produced several denominations in this commemorative gold series for 1969. The 200 Pesos is among the lower-weight pieces in that set, with higher-value strikes reaching into multiple troy ounces.
