Additional information

Cuba's 1993 gold commemorative program was produced during the "Período Especial en Tiempo de Paz" — the Special Period — the economic catastrophe that followed the Soviet Union's collapse and the abrupt end of its annual subsidies to Havana. With hard currency desperately scarce, the Cuban government issued collector coins almost entirely for foreign export, generating dollar revenue the domestic economy couldn't produce through trade. This piece never circulated in Cuba in any meaningful sense.

The Apatosaurus choice reflects the broader paleontological collector market of the early 1990s, following Jurassic Park's cultural dominance. Cynical timing, but effective salesmanship.
