The Provincia de Buenos Ayres operated its own currency apparatus largely independent of the national government well into the 1870s — a consequence of the bitter federalist-unitarian conflict that had defined Argentine politics for decades. Buenos Aires province had its own Banco de la Provincia, its own notes, and considerable resistance to ceding monetary authority to the interior. This 200 Pesos issue falls squarely in that period of provincial financial autonomy, before the 1880 federalization of Buenos Aires finally forced consolidation.
