The Banco y Casa de Moneda de Buenos Ayres occupied an unusual institutional position — it combined central banking functions with an operational mint under a single roof, a hybrid arrangement that reflected the fragmented monetary authority of mid-nineteenth century Argentina, where Buenos Aires province and the Confederation had only recently resolved their decade-long political rupture. By 1864 the bank was managing a paper currency that had already suffered severe depreciation cycles and enjoyed limited confidence beyond the province's borders.
The PS prefix in the Pick reference places this firmly in the specialized South American category — a collector signal that surviving examples are scarce and institutional documentation fragmentary.
