Equatorial Guinea gained independence from Spain in October 1968, and Francisco Macías Nguema — the country's first president — almost immediately began consolidating authoritarian control. This 1970 issue was struck during the brief window before his government descended into what historians would later classify as one of Africa's most brutal dictatorships, a period that saw roughly a third of the population flee or die before his overthrow and execution in 1979.

The coin was produced for international sale rather than domestic circulation, part of a wave of large-format silver issues that newly independent African nations issued through European minting houses to generate hard currency.
