The IV East Asian Games were held in Macau in October and November 2005 — the first time the territory hosted the event under Chinese administration, and the largest sporting event Macau had staged since the handover from Portugal in 1999. The games drew athletes from nine nations and territories across the region, and the Monetary Authority issued commemoratives in both silver and gold to mark the occasion.
