The 200 Nuevos Pesos denomination was introduced as part of Mexico's 1993 monetary redenomination, in which the peso was revalued at 1,000 to 1 — the "Nuevo" prefix a bureaucratic acknowledgment of decades of inflation that had rendered smaller denominations functionally useless. Notes dated 1992 were printed ahead of the official changeover, placing them in the unusual position of being manufactured before the currency they denominate legally existed.
The watermark-only security specification reflects how quickly the series was assembled; later issues in the Nuevos Pesos family added security threads and other features as the infrastructure caught up with the reform timeline.
