Jigme Khesar Namgyel Wangchuck was crowned in 2008 after his father Jigme Singye Wangchuck abdicated — the first voluntary abdication in Bhutanese royal history. This issue followed shortly after, part of a commemorative program accompanying the coronation series. The pairing of Bhutan's fifth king with iconography from Angkor Wat reflects the broader pan-Buddhist cultural identity that Bhutan routinely projects through its numismatic program, though Angkor itself is Cambodian Hindu-Buddhist heritage rather than Bhutanese.
