The 200 New Sheqalim note featuring Zalman Shazar — Israel's third president — belongs to the third series of Bank of Israel notes, a family introduced incrementally from 1985 onward as the country stabilized following the hyperinflation crisis of the early 1980s. That crisis, which saw annual inflation peak above 400% in 1984, prompted the 1985 New Israeli Shekel reform; this denomination's very existence reflects how far purchasing power had eroded in the preceding decade.
Shazar, born Shneur Zalman Rubashov in the Russian Empire in 1889, was a Labor Zionist activist, journalist, and poet long before he became a statesman. He served as president from 1963 to 1973.
