Taiwan's 2000 presidential election was only the second direct popular vote in the island's history, following the landmark 1996 election that had itself been conducted under the shadow of PRC military exercises in the Taiwan Strait. The 2000 contest was arguably more consequential — it ended over fifty years of uninterrupted Kuomintang rule when Chen Shui-bian of the Democratic Progressive Party won with just 39% of the vote in a three-way split, a result that sent shockwaves through cross-strait relations.
Commemorative silver issues from the Central Bank of the ROC in this period were produced in modest quantities aimed primarily at the collector market rather than circulation.
