Issued to commemorate the second inauguration of President Ma Ying-jeou in May 2012, this coin was produced during a period of notably cautious cross-strait relations — Ma's administration had pursued a policy of economic rapprochement with the People's Republic, including the landmark 2010 ECFA trade agreement, which remained politically divisive on the island.
