The Caixa de Estabilização was Brazil's short-lived currency stabilization board, established in 1926 under President Washington Luís as part of an effort to peg the milréis to gold at a fixed rate. These notes were backed by gold reserves and convertible on demand — an arrangement that collapsed within four years when the 1929 crash drained those reserves and the board was dissolved in 1930.
Engraving credit to Sukeichi Oyama at ABNC is worth noting: a Japanese-American craftsman working at a time when such attribution was rarely documented. The reverse design draws from Victor Meirelles, the 19th-century Brazilian academic painter, making this a rare case of a national fine-art source adapted posthumously for intaglio reproduction on currency.
