| Opmerkingen |
The Banco da República dos Estados Unidos do Brazil was itself a short-lived institution — formed in 1890 through the forced merger of the Banco do Brasil and the Banco Nacional, it lasted only until 1893, when it collapsed under the weight of the Encilhamento, Brazil's catastrophic speculative bubble inflated by the newly republican government's loose money policies. Notes from this bank circulated during one of the most financially chaotic periods in Brazilian history, when currency was being issued faster than public trust could absorb it.
The "1st Print, 2nd type" distinction matters: the American Bank Note Company produced multiple plate variations for this series, and the differences are subtle enough that they were long conflated in older catalogs.
