The third Banco do Brazil — not to be confused with the current state institution founded in 1906 — operated under Imperial charter and issued notes that were effectively a private banking currency circulating alongside government-issued paper. The 200 mil réis was a high-value denomination, placing it firmly in commercial and mercantile use rather than retail circulation.
American Bank Note Company produced the plates in New York, which was the standard arrangement for Brazilian private bank paper of this period — domestic printing infrastructure simply could not match ABNC's security engraving. Series A, B, and C suggest sequential issue runs rather than distinct design variants.
