The Quirimbas archipelago, a chain of coral islands off Mozambique's northern coast, gained UNESCO Biosphere Reserve status in 2003. This regional commemorative issue is part of Mozambique's broader practice of issuing collector-targeted coins celebrating natural and cultural heritage sites — a program that accelerated after the 2008 introduction of polymer notes freed the minting budget for smaller commemorative runs.
