Bazaruto Archipelago was declared a national park in 1971 under Portuguese colonial administration — one of the few conservation decisions from that period to survive the upheaval of independence in 1975 and the subsequent civil war largely intact. Mozambique's commemorative coinage has increasingly drawn on marine and ecological subjects, partly reflecting the country's growing ecotourism economy along the Indian Ocean coast.
Nickel plated steel was the practical choice here; the post-conflict economy never made silver commemoratives a realistic option for domestic circulation issues.
