The metical was introduced in 1980, replacing the escudo at par and marking one of the more deliberate acts of economic separation from Portuguese colonial administration following independence in 1975. By 2015, the currency had survived two complete redenominations — the catastrophic inflation of the 1980s and 1990s forced a 1000:1 rebasing in 2006, meaning the "metical" being celebrated here is technically the second currency to bear that name.
