This issue belongs to Italy's long-running series of 200 Lire commemoratives struck through the 1980s, each dedicated to a specific institution or industry. The Taranto Naval Arsenal — Arsenale Militare Marittimo di Taranto — has been the primary maintenance and construction facility for the Italian Navy since its establishment in 1889, making 1989 the centenary year this coin was struck to mark.
Bronzital was adopted for Italian 200 Lire pieces from the series' inception, chosen partly for its resistance to the corrosive salt-air environments common to port cities where these coins circulated heavily.
