Issued for the Jubilee Year 2000, this piece commemorates John Paul II's landmark public act of repentance on March 12th of that year, during which he formally asked forgiveness on behalf of the Church for sins committed by Catholics across twenty centuries — the most sweeping papal apology in history. The ceremony, held at St. Peter's Basilica, was televised globally and remains theologically controversial in some quarters for its implied institutional accountability.
