The Archangel Michael's association with defence and spiritual warfare made him a recurring subject in Vatican iconography, though his appearance on circulating-format bronzital coinage was relatively infrequent.
Bronzital — an aluminum-bronze alloy developed in Italy — was adopted by the Vatican partly because its golden color photographed well in official publications while remaining economical to strike at scale.
