Italian fiduciary notes — fedi di credito — were a stopgap response to the chronic small-coin shortage that plagued Italy through the 1970s. When the state couldn't keep enough low-denomination metal in circulation, local savings banks were permitted to issue their own paper substitutes, redeemable at their counters. The Cassa di Risparmio di Trento e Rovereto was one of dozens of regional institutions that took up this authorization, printing locally through Tipolitografia Stampa Rapida rather than routing the job to a major security printer.

The 200 Lire denomination appeared relatively late in the fiduciary series, by which point the Banca d'Italia was already working to suppress the practice.
