Banca del Salento was one of dozens of regional Italian banks that issued emergency small-denomination notes — fedi di credito — during the severe coin shortage of the mid-1970s. The shortage was real and disruptive: vending machines jammed, buses couldn't make change, and shopkeepers resorted to giving out candy or stamps instead of coins. These private banknote issues filled a genuine gap while the Italian state scrambled to produce sufficient coinage.
The 200 lire denomination places this note in the middle tier of the emergency issues, authorized under a 1976 decree that gave regional banks temporary legal cover to circulate their own paper. Redemption obligations varied by issuer, and not all honored them without dispute.
