The Guardia di Finanza traces its institutional origins to 1774, when the Savoy kingdom established the Legione Truppe Leggere to police smuggling across Alpine borders. The corps evolved through Napoleonic occupation, unification, and two world wars into Italy's primary financial and customs enforcement agency. The 1996 commemorative marking the academy's anniversary was part of a broader Italian program of issuing 200-lire Bronzital pieces to honor state institutions — a series that ran through the 1990s and has since been discontinued with the adoption of euro coinage.
