Romania's Banca Națională has issued commemorative polymer and paper notes periodically since the early 2000s, but a 200 Lei denomination tied to an Orthodox church — Sanislau, a village in Satu Mare County near the Hungarian border — is an unusual choice. Regional religious heritage as a subject for circulating currency sits outside the BNR's typical commemorative program, which has historically favored national figures and landmark anniversaries.
