Myanmar's transition from the Burma Socialist Programme Party era left the Central Bank issuing notes into a deeply unstable monetary environment. The 200 Kyat denomination was introduced after the catastrophic 1987 demonetization — carried out without warning or compensation — which wiped out savings held in 25, 35, and 75 Kyat notes and directly triggered the 8888 Uprising of 1988. New denominations followed the political rupture.
A print run of just over 12 million is modest for a note spanning five years of issue, suggesting either limited distribution reach or significant hoarding driven by public distrust of the banking system following 1987.
